We Interrupt the Festivities for this Announcement

Bush just vetoed SCHIP, the State Children's Health Insurance Program. This will result in 6.6 million children losing health care coverage beginning November 16 and millions more who need health care coverage won't get it at all. This legislation had bi-partisan support and while there are enough votes in the Senate to over-ride the veto, there need to be about 20 more votes on the House side to do the same thing. Might be a good time to call your representative and see where he or she is on that.

Personally, I have a really hard time with someone giving lip service to "family values" and then vetoing a bill like this.

Just a few talking points, should you make that all important call:

*12% of American children don't have any insurance coverage at all

* The U.S. Ranks 37th in the world for infant mortality

* One-in-five U.S. jobs does not provide health insurance, a pension, or wages high enough to support a family

* For a family of 4, one year of health insurance costs an average of $11,000.

* Over 1/2 of all bankruptcy filings in 2001 were a result of medical expenses

Now, back to the party. Red, I hope you brought a lot of salsa...we need another batch of that bisque-y stuff....

Let me tell the world how I really feel. George W. bush is an @$$*00#. Four of my grandchildren will be affected by this stupid veto...all so he can finance his WAR. Steve and I will send money to help pay for the care these children need....we can't afford the everyday stuff, but for instance a broken arm that happened before the paperwork was in effect was taken care of.

On the bright side, this stupidity will probably help a Democrat get elected to the presidency.

It totally sucks, Rosie. And then he has the nerve to say that he supports SCHIP, just at lower levels. Lower levels that aren't sufficient to help the kids already on the program. Oh, and let's not forget that this horrible "expansion" of the program he's so set against is to help middle class families. Because, you know, apparently we're all just made of money and don't have any problem coming up with thousands of extra dollars should our child need anything more than a routine vaccine. Bastid.

Buck, I'd just settle for enough Republicans having the juice to over-ride the frakking veto. Take that, Lame Duck. But yeah, nothing helps out a candidate like being able to say the GOP doesn't want to help sick kids.

Not to bring up the same old trope, but ... (sigh) ... as a resident of DC, I have no voting members of Congress to call who can represent my interests in the legislative branch. I pay federal taxes and DC taxes, and am a full citizen of the U.S.A. in all ways but this one. It's a huge pain in the butt.

I'll make another saucepan of bisque, now ...

Ditto Monica. This infuriates me. Every other friggin' developed country in the world has some form of universal health care. It's just us and South Africa left in the "developed world", and guess what, South Africa is moving toward UHC.

One thing that really pissed me off is that part of his reasoning is he's worried that some folks who make enough to not actually be on the streets or qualify for medicare (read: regular folks) might "take advantage" of that system by dumping their regular health care and jumping on the free health bandwagon. WTF? If you follow that idiotic reasoning, who's to say that someone with a McJob might not dump that McJob so they can jump on the reduced program's bandwagon and still get health care in spite of his veto?

He goes on to talk about how he supports TAX CUTS to help those families who aren't at the very bottom afford "regular" health care. According to your annual cost figure of $11K, how the hell is a tax cut supposed to help someone, say in the $30,000 salary range pay $11,000 for health care? Ain't enough tax cuts in the world, baby, not for regular folks.

Friggin' bastard. I am not one to throw around the word "hate", but I hate him.

Twisi, Mon & CB: Please tell me how you really feel. Don't hold back.

Red: Sorry. If it's any consolation, I firmly believe that you should have a frakking representative.

Mouse, Exactly! Clearly, dude has no idea what health care costs, how little is covered by even the "best" plans and how fast it adds up for regular folks. I already called him a bastid, didn't I?

Kimberly Ann: I understand. There's a stash of small towels on the counter for ease of dabbing foaming mouths. Help yourself.

The "Decider" is a suppurating pustule on the tuchas of humanity, and if anyone in Congress, Dem or Repub, had the brains of a gnat and even as much courage as the Cowardly Lion, his ass and that of his lying, hypocritcal Veep would have been impeached and thrown into prison long ago.

Congress, unfortunately, does not possess those qualities. Damn them.
