POTLUCK!
Last night, as I lay in bed, I thought up about 3 different blog posts. None of which I'm ready to commit to the "Publish Post" button. Guess that's what drafts are for, huh?
Sometimes I can take a half-formed idea and get rolling with it just in the writing. Sometimes not. Today is a not day. Plus I have to go downtown. I have to get a copy of MacBeth for The Child plus a study guide thingy for the entrance exam for high school. (You wouldn't believe how motivated this kid is to do well on that test. Crazy). Plus I want to look for a little statue of Mary. Because it's October, which is one of her months. (May is the other one).
But sometimes you need to roll ideas around with friends, talk about things, see where it takes you. So instead of tormenting with you with something that isn't ready yet, let's have a potluck instead. It's been a while. So come on over. It's a coldish, rainyish day so I think I'm going to make a pot of minestrone and bake a big ol' apple pie.
What are you bringing? Besides YOB?

I'll bring makings for Grasshoppers
and some pizza rolls
The Scottish Play is a wonderful thing. Full of darkness, evil, double double toil and trouble and all that -- but super fun in a Grand Guignol-Halloweeny sort of way. Ian McKellen and Judi Dench did a version that's available on Netflix, I think. When studying Shakespeare, I think it's entirely acceptable to rent the movie, as it's much easier to understand and was always meant to be heard rather than read, anyway.
I'll bring the "salsa bisque" (one can of Medium salsa, one brick of Philly cream cheese, heated to yummy smoothness, and a dash of cayenne pepper just for kicks). Oh, and some chips.
I think I will make a really big pan of cornbread, since it is cold and rainy and all.
Ooh, Cricket#27, I LOVE pizza rolls. The bar tools are in the top drawer of the buffet.
Red: Yes, we went through quite a few film versions of "Romeo and Juliet" when she was reading that last year. Should do the same with the Scottish play. Even her teacher encourages listening to or watching versions of the plays, for exactly the reason you mentioned.
And I'm all over the "bisque". Mmmm, warming!
Twisi: excellent choice. Let me get the butter...
I'm bringing Spicy Sausage Ragu with Grilled Polenta Rounds. And apple cider.
You know I can't cook.
But I can spread goat cheese on the crouton and mix the cake batter, if you want me to.
Mmmm....cake...we need cake. A cake to make me laugh. I'll start the ganache.
SCG: This ragu is awesome. Now stop bogartting the baby.
Remember the Canadian whisky & maple liqueur? I'm bringing that!
Love that stuff. I'll make some pancakes.
Hey, who's got my tiara?
As promised, I have some vitamin C and some penicillin to contribute to the table.
Is that pie ready yet?
Just taking it out of the oven, Hat. And I bet you could crush that penicillin into one of the Grasshoppers that C27 made. Takes the edge off.
Ooh, is that hat for me? You and your hostess gifts.
I'm bringin' edible undies.
A whole pan of 'em, fresh out of the oven.
I'm gonna be late...it's raining; I'll bring trash bags.....with scary faces on them.
A huge pot of chili sounds good with the cornbread twisi is making. I'll bring the fixin's for it. But I'll be carpooling with Rosemary, so I'll be late too.
I'm torn between jambalaya (in deference to the rain and such) and a nice pumpkin cheesecake...then again, I'm kinda crazy, so here's both!
May I have a Grasshopper? Will we all be watching the Scottish play, too?
Love the pretty hats!
Here Syd Cheep Cheep
Since we both have colds, I'm making NyQuil grasshoppers.
NyQuil Grasshoppers: The potluck sniffling, sneezing, coughing, aching, stuffy head, fever, so you can pass out in Lorraine's hallway with the shot glass still in your death grip medicine. Ahhhhh...
Wow, Iwanski. I'm impressed. How did you get the lacey bits to look so realistic? Martha Stewart has nothing on you, man. Have a beer.
Scary face trash bags, Rosie? Are we going to go trick-or-treating?
'K, Gina...the minestrone should be gone by the time you get here with the chili reinforcements.
Jumbalaya AND pumpkin cheesecake, Syd? This rocks. Red has had quite a few Grasshoppers (and C27 has a rather heavy hand, if you know what I mean andIthinkyado) and he's sorta been doing a Scottish Play meets "Clueless" thing over there in the corner. Someone should stop him. 'Cept it's really funny.
Somebody make a little hat for C27.
Buck, could you make some watermelon dacqs, too? Just for old time's sake?
Hat, you've had enough Grasshoppers...here, have a beer.
Hey, Lorraine--I thought for a minute you'd written that Red's "sorta been doing a Scottish Play meets 'Clue' thing"...is it too obvious to guess Lady MacB with the dagger in the King's bedroom?
Maybe I'd better lay off the grasshoppers, too...although they were scrumptious, Cricket!
*hic* pardon me...
Cheep Cheep *hic* Cheep
looks like im the lasht one here again. mindifi crash on yur coush
cheep cheep *hic*
I'm bringing my My curried chicken salad.
Oh, no. A drunk cricket. JP, keep your lighter away from it and oh NO...stay away from the hair metal.....
Ooh, curried chicken salad. Yummy, Anne.
Wow, so sorry I am late! It's a long drive up from SoCal. And of course, the late person always brings the appetizers! What is up with that? Got a killer bean dip here, with some chips. It stayed warm on the way, though!
What, did I miss the party?
Oh, heck no, J. You sit down right next to me with that bean dip. But first, let me get you some pie...oh, sorry. Hat ate it all. But there's some cak...right...I'll just pop in the kitchen and whip up a fruit tart. Save me some dip. Here's a hat.
Um...I haven't been able to crack an eyelid to check on the weather yet. Is it still cold and rainy? I could put together a faux cassoulet (faux because it has no duck) that I've been told is rather tasty...
Unless you'd rather have another cheesecake.
Is there a tot of the Canadian whisky and maple liqueur left? :)
Crap, looks like I missed the party. And I don't even have the excuse of driving from Idaho or SoCal, being right around the corner. See -- life still out of control. I really need a dishwasher...
Are there any Grasshoppers left? Crap.
Gee, Raine, you throw a great party! Thanks for the hat. I feel so loved! Didn't you just love the bean dip? And those Grasshoppers are to die for! Put your feet up, dear, you deserve it! You have been busy!
