No Small Parts

Captain's Log, Stardate, uh, today:

Mr. Sulu has had an asteroid named for him.

There is also an asteroid named for Nichelle Nichols, who played Lt. Uhura.

There is nothing in the article about an asteroid named Shatner or Nimoy.

Just saying.

Hey, Brat...good to see you. You've been busy, yes?

And I've been missing the club a bit, too. But don't despair. We're probably going to open "Here's the 90s" next year. Just have to get through the permitting process, apply for the liquor license, like that.

Take care.

Can't you get a star named after you? If so, isn't it sort of an insult to have a measly asteroid named after you? Just sayin'.

Check again. I think Shatner's is listed under "Denny Crane."

I had a star named for my hubby..."Stevie's Star." Cost a lot. I can only imagine how much an astriod would cost. I'm not sure I love him that much....oh, I do I'm just cheap and I need a new handbag.

Nemoy should have a galaxy named after him. Shatner should have a hemorrhoid named after him.

Check again. Nimoy's may be listed under "Bangles video cameo."

The difference is that in the cases of Takei's and Nichols's asteroids, the asteroid names are actually going to be the official designations used by astronomers.

On the other hand, "naming" a star after someone (or "buying" a piece of the moon, etc.) may get you a pretty certificate to commemorate your monetary expenditure, but it has absolutely no standing within the astronomy community.

In other words, the latter is for vanity, but the former is for science!

Cool -- Nichelle was a groundbreaker for women and for people of color. And who doesn't love Spock? I didn't know Syd's bit about the difference in the naming -- interesting!

Red, we named a star after The Child, but like Syd pointed out, this asteroid thing is scientific, not just for a lark. Men and women in white lab coats will be saying things like, "I was looking at Takei today and I noticed..." It's pretty cool.

Rosie: I say get a new handbag and call it "Steve".

JP: a) funny and 2) funnier.

Hat: I have a thing for Leonard Nimoy. Don't tell.

Syd=smart girl.

CB: Ain't we just full of interesting tidbits 'round here?

***blush*** Thanks, Lorraine! Only in that I can read, though, as I wouldn't have known the difference had I not read about it on Wil Wheaton's blog and the news article to which Wil linked.
