Well, That's Just Crazy

Saturday evening it started to rain. I wasn't aware of this, ensconced as I was with The Child and a second viewing of HSMII (I missed some stuff during the live blog). I went outside to retrieve something from the garage and was gob-smacked by a perfect summer rain. I just stood on the front steps for a bit and took it in.

The rain was falling very gently, settling the August dust. The scent was wet earth with top notes of lavender, rose and mint with just a hint of damp cement.

On Sunday morning it was still raining, harder now. There was no wind so the rain was falling straight down, something we don't often see. It was a good, loud, grape-plumping, puddle-making summer rain. It had cleared by the afternoon, when we walked to a housewarming party, and was still clear when I went downtown to fetch The Neighbor from the ferry.

Now it's raining again. As a native Northwesterner, I love me some rain. Between the months of October and June it can rain as much as it likes. But there is something about rain in August that makes me feel like summer is ending and I don't like that. I'm not ready. There are still things to grill, fruit tarts to make and a handful of tomatoes on the (disappointingly unproductive vines) that need to ripen. No, sir, I don't like it. Even though I know September will likely be a spectacular month (because it usually is the most beautiful of the summer here), I'm not feeling this rain just now. Although I suppose it will make it easier for The Child to curl up with her last book report book. But still.

Stupid global warming.

I wish it would rain here. I'm in L.A. and we only got about one-third our normal rainfall last winter, and things are parched and occasionally sere, and I'm frankly surprised that I haven't heard any declarations of "DROUGHT!"

I wish it would rain...

From the title of this post I assumed you were going to write about the ginormous jet engines that they converted into road dryers in the construction zone yesterday. Did you see that?! Now that, that was some crazy shit. Isn't there a sad song about August rain? There should be. It's wun'rful stuff.

Eagle Eye: I meant "dring". I'm conserving my u's today. (Fixed it).

True, Twisi, true.

Anne: There's a line of perfumes by a company called Demeter. They used to make one called "Earthworm". No kidding.

Syd: If this keeps up I'll do my best to send some your way. (The Spouse finally finished HPVII, btw. It's made conversation at the dinner table much less fraught!)

Hat: That was some crazy stuff, indeed. I can't believe they think they'll finish 5 days ahead of schedule. Let's hear it for the DOT!

I'm tired of bitchin' about the heat,I want to bitch about the rain.
But seriously,September is a beautiful month here in O-town as well. Our rainy season usually doesn't begin till about October,so I'm not exactly ready for the change yet either...
Although the smell of damp cement sounds appealing.

I love a good rain. As long as I'm not outside and have nowhere to go.

Yes, it is cleansing, isn't it, Rosie? Especially in the summer. In the winter it's just, uh, wet.

Red: Big fan of the rain myself. Get cranky if there hasn't been enough of it. A little shower now and then to spare the water bill? Sure. Days on end, in August, not so much.
