Now For Some Good News

The school picnic was a success. I know this, because both parents and teachers were coming up to tell me how great it was. They particularly liked that it happened right after school let out, rather than being on another day.

Attendance was significantly improved over other years. That was a good thing. Except for the fact that we barely had enough food, even with me making an emergency run to Costco right before it started.

I thought this photo was amusing:

We had pinatas for the little kids and they recruited The Child to help them. She has developed something of a reputation for being the person who's gonna bring it on home when it comes to pinata whacking. Not, perhaps, the sort of thing one puts on a high school application but we all have our gifts.

Please note the use of the phrase "high school application". Because I now am in possession of an 8th grader. Who needs a cocktail?

The Child was exceedingly proud of her report card, as well she should be. She just barely missed getting honors because she had one D. But since that D was in math and up from the F of last trimester, she'll take it. Not to mention that her teacher gave her high marks for effort and told me himself that she had worked really, really hard. As for the rest of her grades, though, wow. She brought up her grades, in all but one subject. And when I say "brought up", we're talking about A's and B's up from C's and D's. Yeah, I'm bragging and you're going to sit there and listen to it. This is a huge, huge accomplishment for her. Not to mention that the 8th grade teacher (who had her for social studies and lit this year) said that if she can just get her organization worked out and turn in on time the work that she does, she'd be "golden".

Of course, we know that. She knows that. So once again, this summer, we will work on those skills some more.

Last night she made a flyer, advertising herself as a Mother's Helper, and distributed it to some young families in the 'hood. Hopefully she'll get a few gigs. I'm a firm believer in kids being able to just knock around for the summer and not being over-programmed, even though I totally understand that most people have to work and don't have the luxury of letting their kids bash around kid-like for 2.5 months. But that said, The Child is now at an age where the responsibility of work is not a bad thing, either. And she gets snaps for being all entrepreneurial and motivated.

I must away. I promised The Child we'd blow some gift cards at The Gap. I need to find a kicky skirt for Chicago. And I need to make a salad for the Ministries dinner at church tonight. This is always a very lovely affair, with dinner catered by Mario Batali's folks. Yeah, we know how to roll.

Happy first day of summer, y'all. It was supposed to rain here today but at present it is beautifully sunny and mild. The tomatoes want watering. Oh, golly, how I love this time of year.

Pass me that cocktail.

And pick up an extra kicky skirt, while you're at it.

hell yeah -- brag ON with your mom self. That's great news, about the report card.

My son had a rough 7th grade year. I seriously do think 7th grade should just automatically earn brownie points on folks' karma scales. It's rough. Hormones alone kick their little asses. Anyway, the worst part about Dear Son's low grades in 7th was the way he saw himself. I was really worried because I could see he was starting to believe he just wasn't a good student. (plus, big sisters' shadows, that whole thing) It was starting to look like viscious circle. Anyway, slowly but surely he started bringing things around, grades started to come up, I didn't have to be at the school every week. Fast forward to now, he's finishing up 8th grade, all As & Bs except for in honors science which fell to a C this trimester (but hello, honors, that wouldn't have happened last year) Way up from last year, but the best thing is that he now SEES HIMSELF as a successful student. It now MEANS something to him to get a good mark, and he is seeing the consequences of effort. He's proud of himself! I love that! THANKGAWD, finally, hallelujah, and all that.

Anyway, I can relate, and feel really happy for you and the Child. 7th grade is not for sissies. She should be darned proud of herself. Sounds like she's on a good path. Kudos to you, too, Mom.

(And to anyone out there thinking, enough already with the mom talk: suck it up and deal with it.)

Seriously, JP. What are we going to do with an 8th grader?

Pink or blue?

Cowbell: Solidarity, sister! And I totally get what you say about your son. The Child's issues have been more about how she perceives her abilities. Everyone who has taught her the last few years knows that her grades haven't been a reflection of her ability. The fact that she finally is starting to see herself the way the rest of us do is HUGE.

I could care less about grades per se, but to see her giving her best effort, THAT matters. And the fact that she now sees what can come of that sort of effort...dang. Next year could be a whole different story.

J: Don't get too excited just yet. It might be more servicable than kicky. Depends on what's there. Although JP's will definately be kicky, no matter what.

Tell The Child congrats on the report card, and way to go on the entrepreneurialism. I'm jealous of the catered dinner. That's SO not fair!

It's gorgeous here today, too.

K- too frakking true. Isn't that why God made calculators?

G-don't be jealous. It's just Italian food (prepared by excellent chefs who obviously gave the food gene to their kid)...nothing to be jealous of.

Commenting on 2 blogs....I feel bad about Bugsy....but it sounds like he was so loved and lived a high life. I have a Foo Foo dog too...Violet...but she thinks she is a Lab.

Good for the child...oops the young lady...I agree math is so a PIA. Sadly, I ignored it and then decided to be a nurse...catch up. Effort is just as important as the grade. Even bad Italian food is good.

Sling, see this is why I keep you around. This is the sort of advice that is worth it's weight in gold. That said, how do you clean an 8th grader?

As for Ella, pretty much did that for you.

Sling, well, a fat lot of good you are.

Iwanski, should you be enticed away from the Taste in two weeks, I'll attempt to demonstrate the difference. Pep Boys. Hee.

I had lots of things to say, but the fabulousness that IS Ella Fitzgerald made me forget it all.

She was the finest musician of the 20th century, bar none. There, I said it.
