Unmitigated Gall

I don't know why I continue to be surprised by these clowns but man, oh, man, here they go again:

There is a bill going before the Senate this week. Called the Cheney-Specter Bill it:

It allows President Bush—and every president after him—to wiretap Americans indefinitely, in secret, without a warrant and without any oversight.

It effectively pardons the president for any illegal behavior by forcing Congress to concede that he has the inherent authority to conduct the program—something federal courts, numerous legal experts and many leading Republicans disagree with.

It completely guts FISA (Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act) which has protected the privacy of Americans against illegal wiretaps for close to 30 years.

It prevents any legal challenges from taking place in the public court system. Instead, it moves all cases to a secret court, where only Bush administration officials can argue it.

It would immunize any officials who broke the law in this program from being held accountable in the future.

In other words, since a federal court has recently ruled that illegal wiretapping is unconstitutional, the President is looking to cover his arse so that he can't be prosecuted for breaking the law. Because we couldn't have that, now could we? Accountability and legality from a sitting president? The horror.

Might I suggest you pick up the phone and call your senators today and tell them, uh, no. Sheesh.

All the more reason to call your Senators. This is the kind of thing that sets a very bad precedent no matter which party is in the White House.

Auntie Raine? What's Vraklempt.. or whatever you wrote in that comment?
I found a musical called Assasins. It's about 8 famous Assasins. The first song says:
'Hey pal
feeling blue?
Don't know what to do?
C'mere and Shoot a president.'
I'm thinking a paintball gun will suffice.

Just remember your anger in 2 years, when you are old enough to vote. It matters.

Oh dear... it's like some evil mole burrowing away at the core values of the - ahem - civilised world.

A similar - but much less far-reaching - law was passed here in the UK a few years with hardly an eyelid flutter from the great and discerning public. It basically allowed the government virtually unlimited access to all emails sent and received by ordinary people.

Orwell, anyone?

D, What continues to get me are the people who truly believe that because they aren't terrorists and have nothing to hide it is ok for the government to spy on them.

But yes, between the survellience and the doublespeak (had you heard? We're winning in Iraq. Yeah, apparently that's what victory looks like) Orwell is the first author that springs to mind.

The nice thing about being a constituent of Feingold's (and even of Kohl's, I suppose) is that he can be trusted to stay on top of this stuff and oppose, oppose, oppose.

I actually wrote his office when this whole NSA scandal hit the papers, thanking him for challenging the Man. Feingold sent me a nice two-page letter (a form, I'm sure, signed by a Feinbot and folded by an intern) laying out all the legal and policy arguments. Great guy, great staff.

Now I really am varklempt. Tawk amongst yourselves. I will give you a topic: Wiretapping involves neither wires nor actual tapping. Discuss.
