Doing the Math
Parenting is all about the "teachable moments", when you drop a gentle word or example here and there in hopes that your child will pick it up and store it away for future use. Sometimes these moments have to do with life lessons, sometimes with academics. Today I thought we'd focus on everyday math.
"The President's approval rating is 31%," I said.
She looked at me wide-eyed. "You mean, if there were 100 people only 31 of them would like him?"
Nodding in the affirmative I further explained that since he'd won the election with 52% of the vote, these new polls show that even some people who voted for him realize that he's doing a bad job.
"Well, duh," she said. "I could have told them that".

Next, you can help her study psychology and explain that the 31 who still like him are bughouse crazy.
Breaking it down even more, he only got 60 million votes out of 300 million Americans.
That means in total only 20% of the country voted for him.
Where's your mandate now, see?
