Another Sweet Thing

Roses.

In the cool of the morning I cut my first roses of the season: apricot colored "Just Joey" for the living room, pale pink "Heritage" in the bathroom and on my desk, 3 "Heritage" buds for The Child's room and one gorgeously fragrant "Gertrude Jekyll" for our bedroom.

I love roses. So does Jane Austen.

I miss, miss, miss my roses.
But I surely don't miss the japanese beetles that ate the petals in a way that brought plagues of locust to mind.

Do you have japanese beetles on the west coast?

It got to 80 here yesterday, Mouse. There were a mess of blooms that were only buds the day before. Crazy.

Aw, thanks, Nic.

Dana, we don't have Japanese beetles in Washington (although they can be found in Oregon and California). The biggest threats to my roses are aphids (but I have lots of ladybugs) and black spot, which is a ridiculous condition that simply can't be eradicated through any environmentally correct method. Fortunately, it just affects the leaves and not the blooms so I just co-exist with it.

What would a Thomas Hardy action figure like? A sheep leaping to its death from a craggy precipice?

Dariush, I believe they tried that in the development phase but found it too harrowing for sensibilities of tender-hearted college sophomores. Instead I believe he's sold with his own coppice gate and a wind-up thrush.
