Picture Album, What is it? 6?
Day 4. Temperatures had been steadily dropping and we were all clinging to hope. That sounds really dramatic. But seriously. You know me...I'm the ultimate "glass half full and it's really good wine, here have some" kind of gal. But after 3 days of cold and dark, it was starting to feel like it would always be cold and dark. So when the first real City Light crew showed up, with lots of bucket trucks, the sheer, unadulterated joy was palpable. The foreman even said that he was "very confident" that we would have power by 11 that night.
Turns out, the lines that went down on our street were not the reason that we didn't have power. They are important, but the source of the problem was a few blocks south of us. So after the guys restrung line, they were off to fix the "real" problem.
Meanwhile, in the afternoon, another crew showed up to clear the tree. Technically, that is the responsibility of the Department of Transportation but they were so jammed that the City was helping out.
They had a couple of chain saws and about 5 good humored guys.
They cut some of the tree into splittable rounds for us to use and hacked the rest of it into 8 foot logs that we could cut up later. (We were all very excited that we got to keep the wood rather than having to pay the City to haul it off).
There were also a lot of branches that had to be removed first. This is the start of it. By the time they were done, the branches were piled about 3 feet high and stretched from the end of the block to The Neighbor's driveway.
It took about 3 hours for them to dispatch the tree. As they removed the last length of trunk, gravity went to work and what was left made a lurch and splooshed back into its hole. We've decided we're going to decorate it for Christmas.

Think it'll take root or is it completely dead?
It's very much alive. But we're thinking it would make a very interesting sculpture and are now looking for chainsaw artisans who can transform it into something superfantastic.
