Grrl Power
Sometimes I think that the 80s are to music what the Democratic party is to politics: a very big tent full of disparate viewpoints. You've got your elegant pretty boys, you've got your synth, goth and pop. A song could be big and orchestral (I'm thinking Roxy Music) or straight ahead, punk laced rock 'n roll (Pretenders). It was a decade that was all over the map, musically. (And maybe you could make a simimlar statement about most other decades and it just seems that way to me because I've been spending so much time finding videos and the immersion has gone to my head).
Anyhoo, another thing that was cool about the 80s was how many women there were making records. And there too you can find representations of just about every way to make music. This was the decade that gave us singers/songwriters as various as Chrissie Hynde, Annie Lennox, Madonna and Pat Benetar. And we even got stuff like this:

Okay, those Bananarama girls really didn't get the fact that they were being filmed. One of them wasn't even trying to do the choreography.
I think they were intimidated by Toni Basil.
Oh Auntie L! You love us! You really really love us!
When I was a kid, I thought Toni Basil was stupid.
She was just way over my head, turns out.
Eva, 'Course I do. "Oh, bloggies, you're so fine, you're so fine you blow my mind. Hey bloggies! Hey bloggies!"
Iwanski, I had the same experience with Satre. Some things are just wasted on youth.
I've always been a huge Toni Basil fan. Well, that song anyway. And there was something a little different about the 80's. Much more eclectic, I think. The 70's were all anti-war protest songs, mellow folk songs, or blow your ears off acid rock. The 80's were great.
