Things on November 1st

1. The They over at the National Weather Service said that we would have a mild El NiƱo winter. The Farmer's Almanac says otherwise. Based on the ice on my car windows the last three mornings, I'm going with the Almanac.

2. We did not carve jack-o-lanterns this year. We have 5 whole pumpkins on our porch. I did have some jack-o-lantern luminaria bags (from whence they came I know not) so we put votives in those instead. Whatever. The trickers of the treats did not seem to mind. And many of them complimented our decorations, which amounts to many fake spiderwebs strewn through the rose bushes and lavendar. The Child did it with a friend. I don't envy them the cleanup.

3. I'm wondering, is it a bad thing to eat mini Snickers bars for breakfast?

4. There are men on The Neighbor's roof. They have very noisy saws and they are preparing to remove said roof as she is adding a second story. For the record, the project was supposed to start in June. June would have been nice. Then she would have been without a roof during one of the hottest Seattle summers on record. As it is, she's thinking of deducting her heat bills from the architect's fee.

5. Today is All Saints Day. We're going to eat a very elegant fish supper tonight. Tomorrow, which is All Souls, we'll be doing our Dia de los Muerto thing with Brookalinatina's classic enchiladas. I love feast days.

6. The Child and I are going to the dentist today to have our teeth cleaned. I've been going to this dentist for nearly 20 years but I'm starting to think it's time for a change. Mostly because her hygenist always makes me feel defensive about my flossing habits. Also, I have bad teeth. No, that is a moral judgement. I have fragile teeth. And an overbite. And I really could use some cosmetic work on the front teeth. But my dentist always says things about the state of my teeth that makes me think that a) the thousands upon thousands of dollars paid to her and to assorted oral surgeons has changed nothing substantively and that thousands upon thousands more would be required to give me anything remotely approaching an Ultra Brite smile. I find this depressing.

7. I have The Child's parent-teacher conference tomorrow.

8. I also have my assignment for Election Day. I'm going to be a Comfort Captain. Doesn't that sound like a good job for a mom? My job will be to make sure that all the GOTV workers are eating and drinking water and taking breaks. I can so do that. I'll just work the morning so The Dog doesn't have to be alone all day. But I'm going to volunteer to go back down after The Child gets home from school and work until the polls close. Plus, I get to go to the election night party, which I gotta say, makes me kind of excited. Even though I will miss "Gilmore girls".

9. Speaking of which, what is it with network tv this week? Everything is a rerun. Hello? Did not the new season begin the last week of September? And did anyone else notice that "Studio 60" wasn't even on? I have a very bad feeling about that.

10. I am not going to eat Smarties for lunch.

OH but you should eat smarties for lunch. As a matter of fact, everyone should. I had apple slices smeared with leftover caramel for lunch.

Apples are good for you. Even dipped in caramel. Maybe if I ate an apple with the Smarties?

Thanks for the roof update - something tells me I'm glad I'm at work and not able to watch in person the destruction of my once- cozy-soon-to-be-even-more-torn-up-and-even-colder-home. I am truly heating the back yard and most of the block right now. Can you feel and hear my furnace running as any small and welcome pocket of warm air remaining in my house is sucked out the kitchen into the now-vast nothingness that was once my family room?

I need chocolate and will get some right now from the office down the hall. Then things will be a little better.

I had a Reece's Peanut Butter cup for breakfast.

I'm with you on the weather thing. Mild and global warming my ass. I want a refund.

I predict Studio 60 will be off during November and then back sometime later on another night. I heard they can't afford to cancel it.

Snickers has nuts and milk, so there's 2 food groups. Not sure about the Smarties, but I say go for it, because they're good.

Love the way your mind works. And I wouldn't mind "Studio 60" having a better slot. 9pm would be good. Maybe on Wednesday when there's nothing to watch anyway.

Maria is lucky to have you, as are the GOTV! workers.

Neighbor - I hope I get to meet you when I'm in town. Sorry about the whole roof thing.

Elroy: You are the man for all things entertainment. I knew that.

Thanks for the dentist tip.

I really, I prefer to think of Smarties as an amuse bouche. Tootsie Rolls are more of an appetizer.

Alan, I'm still hoping Maria crowns me Volunteer of Volunteers at the election night party. You know my thing for tiaras. Oh, and how 'bout I just invite The Neighbor to join us for dinner. Poor thing. She'll probably be living with us by then anyway.

City Mouse, Whatever is in that Pan thing? Because if it is Snickers bars I am all over it.

I noticed the lack of new shows this last week or so as well. The first thought that came to mind was that instead of making entire seasons like seasons past and then cancelling them they were trying to just make a few shows to see how it goes first. Shark for instance ran for like a month then took a couple weeks off with a promised 4 consecutive new ones this month.

Grish, They jerk us around and jerk us around and then they wonder why they're losing market share to SciFi and HBO, etc. etc. Idiots.

Good for you helping the GOV efforts.

You, Lorraine, are a great American.

LA: What the heck are Runts? Is that some sort of Wisconsin cheese candy?

Just trying to do my bit, Iwanski.

Beware the siren's song, Charlie.

Oh, and btw, Alan, enough with the balmy DC weather reports. Thank you.
