Movie Recommendation

I would be remiss if I didn't tell you about a movie that you must, absolutely must see. "I am David", released in 2004, is a beautifully rendered story of a 12 year old boy who escapes from a Bulgarian labor camp. He is aided in his escape by a friend. He has nothing but a loaf of bread, a compass and a sealed letter. He is told to trust no one and make his way north, to Denmark. (I imagine The Child in this situation. She is still in the labor camp, arguing with her friend: "Why Denmark? What if I just go to Italy?")

The ever ravishing Jim Caviezel and the sweet-as-the-tea-bun-she-resembles Joan Plowright are the only "names", although Stewart Copeland scored the film. It is gorgeously filmed. It is a story about finding the good in people. It is about courage and will and all the other stuff that seems to be in such short supply sometimes.

It is a family film, for those of you who have children around the age of The Child or older (I wouldn't think anyone under 10 would exactly get it but there's nothing in it they couldn't see, say if they were playing with banditos while Mom and Dad watched it). But you don't need to have children to appreciate this film. You pretty much just have to be human.

Put it on your Netflix list and move it to the top of the queue. Do it now.

Charlie, Then you are excused.

I almost said something along the lines of "You will love this movie, provided you are not a cat-hating Scotsman" but that seemed cruel and unnecessary.

Okeedoke, we'll rent it, even though--gasp!--it doesn't seem to have been adapted from a comic book.
